Fred Rendon Sr. and the Dream of a Deli
When my grandfather, Fred Rendon Sr., founded New York Deli in 1982, his dream was to bring the authentic flavors and deli traditions of New York City to the Rio Grande Valley. After spending years on the East Coast learning the art of traditional deli sandwiches, he returned home with the knowledge, techniques, and inspiration to create his own recipes, laying the foundation for what New York Deli would become.
More Than a Restaurant
For me, New York Deli is much more than a restaurant. It represents the countless memories I made working alongside my grandfather. Everything I know about the deli business, I owe to him. He taught me that quality, consistency, and treating every customer like family are what truly matter.
Thirty years ago, I began creating my own menu alongside the classic deli favorites my grandfather introduced. Since then, I've passionately crafted new sandwiches and recipes while staying true to the quality and traditions that have always defined New York Deli. Today, our menu reflects both the classics that built our reputation and the favorites I've created over the past three decades, each made with the same passion for great deli food.
A Local Favorite for Over Three Decades
Through hard work, perseverance, and a passion for great deli food, I've been fortunate to establish New York Deli as a local favorite throughout the Rio Grande Valley. My menu is a reflection of that journey, featuring the timeless deli staples our guests have loved for decades alongside handcrafted favorites I've created over the years. It brings me great pleasure to share that passion with both our longtime patrons and those visiting us for the very first time. I hope every meal creates the same sense of comfort, tradition, and happiness that New York Deli has always meant to me.
Memorabilia on Our Walls
Outside of great food, another passion of mine is The Beatles. But the collection you see on the walls of New York Deli actually began long before it ever found a home here. My collection started with my first Beatles vinyl, Abbey Road. While my wife, Esmeralda's collection started at an early age with a Paul McCartney T shirt. Our shared love of The Beatles was one of the things that brought us together, and over the years it became a hobby and passion we could share. Eventually, our two collections became one. Together, we continued building it through our travels, the many concerts we attended, and pieces we discovered along the way. Each one carries a memory, whether it is a place we visited, a concert we experienced, or simply a moment from our life together. In many ways, the collection has become a love letter to the hobby and passion we have shared throughout the years, and an ode to The Beatles and the music that helped bring us together. What makes the collection even more special is how our customers have become part of its story. Over the years, many have generously gifted us Beatles memorabilia, including original Beatles inspired artwork they have created themselves. Those contributions have added their own stories to ours and made the collection feel like something that no longer belongs only to us, but has become part of New York Deli itself. What began as something personal between the two of us has taken on a life of its own. We love that it now has a place here, where we can share it with everyone.
